Adoption

Adopting a parrot from Heartland Avian Rescue Project means you are willing to become the guardian of a companion parrot in need of a forever home. Our adoption process is carefully structured, allowing us to get to know you and your family, while we introduce you to the birds in our program. We will share important details about the needs and keeping of the species or particular parrot you are interested in.

Our support does not end with adoption. Whether you have lived with parrots before or this is your first foray, be open to learning something new – parrots have a lot to teach us! We can guide you through establishing trust, working with the bird to become “family friendly” rather than unhealthily attached to just one person, navigating what comes after the “honeymoon period” (first two to three weeks), and much more. This might include offering helpful tips, a home visit, or making suggestions on seeking out additional help.

HARP does not operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our policy is to find the best possible match for each parrot we work with – the well-being of the birds is our highest priority.

Please read through our Adoption Requirements before filling out and submitting an Adoption Application. You may also want to check out “The Home Visit: What to Expect” and “Costs of Parrot Ownership”.
