Adoption Requirements
- You must be 19 years old (if a Nebraska resident) or 18 years old (if an Iowa resident) to adopt a bird from us, and provide us with a current photo I.D.
- Any bird adopted from HARP must never be purposefully bred or housed in a manner that is conducive to breeding: birds of opposite sex should not be housed together, nesting material must be consciously eliminated, and any eggs should not be allowed to incubate.
- Any bird adopted from HARP must never be rehomed without the express written consent of HARP.
- You must arrange for and take the parrot to a wellness exam provided by an experienced avian vet within 6 months of adoption, and be committed to an annual wellness exam.
- You must agree to return the parrot to HARP if for any reason you can not continue to provide care or keep in your custody.
- You must live within a 90 minute radius of the Omaha metro area. If you plan to bring the parrot with you to a workplace or if it will spend significant time in a location other than your home, a visit to that space must be arranged for, concurrent to the home visit.
- You must sign the adoption contract and pay all associated fees in cash or online prior to taking custody of the bird.
- You must have extraordinary patience with this process. Not every bird will be right for every home, and vice versa. We are a small organization of volunteers who are also busy with full time jobs and families, but we are committed to the birds in our care and the bird keeping community at large. If you have patience through the adoption process, you will also be better prepared for the patience it will take to develop a deep and trusting relationship with your parrot.
